Printer Parts | Adapter Board: Signal Bridge for Printhead
Adapter Board

In printing equipment, the adapter board—though small in size—is an indispensable component of the overall connection system. Its main purpose is to achieve signal conversion between the mainboard and the printhead, ensuring stable operation across different models and brands. By matching voltage and signal protocols, the adapter board allows components of various types to work seamlessly. It serves as a “bridge of compatibility,” especially when upgrading or replacing printhead models or adding new functions.
Functions and Roles
1. Signal Conversion and Transmission
Different printhead manufacturers (such as EPSON, RICOH, KONICA, and XAAR) use different signal protocols and interface standards. The adapter board converts signals from the mainboard into drive signals that the printhead can recognize. This includes key control data such as waveform control, voltage triggering, heating signals, and temperature feedback.
2. Interface Standard Conversion
Since mainboards may use FPC soft cables or pin headers while printheads use different connectors, the adapter board allows interconnection between different types—such as converting between FPC, FFC, and other pin interfaces—without loss or delay in data transmission.
3. Voltage Regulation and Protection
Printheads require highly stable operating voltages, as even minor fluctuations can cause malfunctions. The adapter board is equipped with a built-in voltage regulation module, filter components, and capacitors to ensure stable voltage supply, effectively extending the printhead’s lifespan.
4. Printhead Expansion and Compatibility
In multi-printhead and multi-channel printing systems, the adapter board can be used to expand control signals and enable synchronized operation of multiple printheads. For example, in configurations such as dual DX7 or quad XP600, each printhead is independently connected to the mainboard through adapter boards, ensuring stable operation without interference.
5. Cost-Effective Upgrade Solution
Instead of replacing the mainboard during an upgrade, using adapter boards provides a cost-saving alternative. It simplifies transitions between printhead generations while maintaining stable communication and reliable output.
Performance Advantages
Strong Signal Conversion and Pin Mapping Capability
The core function of the adapter board is to convert electrical signals between different interfaces (such as between FPC connectors and pin-type connectors), enabling compatible communication between the mainboard and the printhead. Most adapter boards support precise Pin Mapping configurations, maintaining signal stability across different printhead types.
Voltage Compatibility and Pressure Design
Supports various voltage ranges such as 24V/33V, accommodating different brands’ power requirements. Built-in capacitors and resistors effectively filter and stabilize power fluctuations.
High-Quality Connectors (Gold-Plated Terminals / Anti-Oxidation)
Premium connectors ensure reliable signal transmission, reduce contact resistance, and minimize signal loss or interference.
Industrial-Grade PCB Materials
Made from high-temperature resistant, multi-layer PCBs with excellent thermal conductivity and durability, suitable for continuous industrial use.
Compact Design and Easy Installation
Compact and modular structure allows for quick installation and maintenance on-site, minimizing downtime.
Application Fields
1. UV Printers (Flatbed / Roll-to-Roll)
Connects the mainboard and UV printheads such as KM1024i, GH2220, i3200, XAAR for signal control and voltage management.
2. Eco-Solvent / Sublimation / Thermal Printers
Supports communication with Epson printheads (DX5, DX7, XP600, TX800) for color inkjet control and precision printing.
3. Multi-Head or Multi-Color Systems
Allows stable control of multiple printheads, ink channels, and voltage systems for synchronized multi-color printing.
4. High-Speed Industrial Printers
Used in industrial printing systems that require high-speed signal control and real-time feedback for precise output.
5. Printhead Upgrade or Replacement Systems
Ideal for upgrading from models like DX5 to i3200—adapter boards provide a bridge between different generations of printheads and mainboard systems.
